Mahindra Unveils EV Manufacturing Facility at Chakan With Battery Assembly Plant

Mahindra Inaugurates EV Manufacturing Facility at Chakan

Mahindra has inaugurated a new state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing and battery assembly facility at its expansive Chakan plant. This facility, dedicated to producing Electric Origin SUVs, reflects Mahindra’s commitment to sustainable innovation. Leveraging Industry 4.0 technologies, advanced robotics, and renewable energy, the facility aligns with India’s COP26 goals for 2030.

Advanced Automation and Industry 4.0 Technology at the Core

The Chakan facility spans 88,000 m² and boasts a fully automated Press Shop, AI-driven Body Shop, and advanced robotic Paint Shop. Over 1,000 robots and cutting-edge automated systems drive the production process, monitored via an IoT-powered “Nerve Center” for real-time insights and end-to-end traceability. Industry 4.0 technologies, including Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) and Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), ensure efficient material handling and streamlined operations.

Compact and Innovative Battery Assembly Line

Mahindra’s battery assembly plant stands out as one of the most compact and efficient in the world. It features proprietary switching technology, patented insulation designs, and multi-layered testing processes for superior quality and performance. Using Industry 4.0-enabled automation, the plant integrates indigenously developed processes to produce high-performance, long-lasting batteries.

Driving India’s EV Ambitions with a Vision for the Future

With an investment of ₹4,500 crore, part of a larger ₹16,000 crore plan spanning FY22–27, the facility is a significant milestone in Mahindra’s journey to revolutionize EV production in India. Beyond manufacturing, the plant emphasizes inclusivity, targeting a 25% gender diversity ratio, and reinforces Mahindra’s “Make in India for the World” vision.
