Suzuki Motor Corporation has announced a major investment initiative in partnership with NDDB Mrida Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). Through its subsidiary, Suzuki R&D Center India Private Limited, the Japanese automaker has signed an agreement to establish biogas plants across India. The signing ceremony took place at NDDB headquarters in Anand, Gujarat, with Suzuki’s President Toshihiro Suzuki and NDDB’s Executive Director S. Rajeev, alongside prominent Indian dairy industry representatives, in attendance.
The project will focus on converting cow dung into purified compressed biomethane gas, which will be used as a clean energy source for vehicles. This innovative approach aims to advance environmental conservation, promote agricultural development, and provide sustainable energy solutions for India’s mobility sector.
₹250 Crore Investment to Drive Sustainability
Suzuki has committed over ₹250 crores (approximately $30 million USD) to establish five biogas CNG plants in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district. These plants, expected to be operational by 2025, will play a pivotal role in Suzuki’s larger goal of achieving carbon neutrality in India. Additionally, the initiative will support rural mobility services, making clean and affordable transportation available to rural communities.
Suzuki’s collaboration with NDDB Mrida builds on its July 2022 establishment to promote agricultural development and environmental conservation. The biogas business expansion will also involve partnerships with dairy cooperatives, such as Banas Dairy, which has been instrumental in facilitating this project in the Banaskantha district.
Expanding Biogas Initiatives Across Gujarat
Beyond Banaskantha, Suzuki has entered into agreements with Amul Dairy in Anand and Dudhsagar Dairy in Mehsana to set up additional biogas plants, further extending its reach in Gujarat. These plants are part of a broader strategy to expand Suzuki’s biogas business and integrate rural mobility services using biogas fuel for CNG vehicles.
By fostering innovation and sustainability, Suzuki’s biogas initiative underscores its commitment to providing clean energy solutions and supporting rural development while aligning with India’s environmental goals.
