LICO Materials Opens ₹250 Crore Battery Recycling Plant in Bengaluru

LICO Materials Opens Battery Recycling Plant in Bengaluru

LICO Materials, a leading player in lithium-ion battery recycling, has launched a cutting-edge recycling facility in Bengaluru. The company revealed plans to invest ₹250 crore over the next few years to develop a downstream hydrometallurgy plant, further bolstering India’s battery materials supply chain and supporting the nation’s push towards sustainable energy solutions.

Bengaluru Facility to Drive EV Industry Growth

The new plant, initially designed to handle 4 GWh of battery input annually, will play a pivotal role in ensuring a steady supply of critical materials for India’s rapidly growing electric vehicle (EV) sector. LICO aims to scale the plant’s capacity to 10 GWh per year within the next 3-4 years, in line with India’s ambitious target to achieve 30% EV adoption by 2030. With the Indian EV industry projected to grow by 250%, LICO’s investment in battery recycling is expected to significantly reduce dependence on imported materials and contribute to a robust domestic supply chain.

Sustainable Future Through Battery Recycling and Hydrometallurgy

In addition to its recycling capabilities, the Bengaluru facility features a zero-liquid-discharge system and is designed to process up to 17,500 metric tonnes of used batteries annually. By 2027, LICO plans to recycle the equivalent of 200,000 metric tonnes of electric car batteries each year. The company is also preparing to establish its hydrometallurgy plant to extract high-purity metals from battery waste, which will be used to supply materials for gigafactories and energy storage systems. This initiative aims to close the loop in India’s battery materials supply chain and support the country’s clean energy transition.

With a focus on innovation and sustainability, LICO Materials continues to drive advancements in the materials sector, providing high-performance solutions that promote energy efficiency and environmental sustainability across multiple industries.
