In a major boost to India’s electronics manufacturing sector, the Union Cabinet has approved the setting up of a semiconductor unit in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. The ₹3,706 crore project will be executed through a joint venture between HCL and Foxconn, one of the world’s leading electronics manufacturers. The facility will specialize in the production of display driver chips used in mobile phones, laptops, and automobiles.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the plant will process 20,000 wafers each month, translating to an estimated 3.6 crore chips. These driver chips are essential components that regulate the quality and format of visuals on digital screens. The plant will be located near the upcoming Jewar airport in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) region.
Strengthening India’s Semiconductor Supply Chain
This will be India’s sixth semiconductor facility and is expected to further catalyze the development of a display panel plant in the country. Vaishnaw emphasized the project’s strategic significance, noting that it could help India meet up to 40% of its semiconductor demand. In addition to catering to the domestic market, the plant will also supply components to Foxconn’s global operations.
The facility is scheduled to become operational by 2027 and will generate employment for approximately 2,000 people. The move aligns with India’s broader push to become a global hub for chip design and manufacturing, building on the 25 lakh-strong workforces already employed in the electronics manufacturing sector.
Design and Innovation Ecosystem on the Rise
India’s semiconductor initiative is also witnessing strong momentum on the research and design front. According to the minister, cutting-edge design units are emerging across several states, with active participation from 270 academic institutions and 70 startups. Already, 20 chip designs developed by students have been successfully taped out by SCL Mohali, marking significant progress in domestic innovation.
As India accelerates its semiconductor roadmap, the HCL-Foxconn partnership stands as a landmark development, reinforcing the country’s growing capabilities in advanced electronics manufacturing.
