Vedanta to Establish ₹1 Lakh Crore Aluminium Refinery in Odisha

Mining conglomerate Vedanta has unveiled plans to set up a state-of-the-art aluminium refinery and smelter in Rayagada, Odisha. With an investment of ₹1 lakh crore, the project aims to strengthen the company’s presence in the region while advancing India’s aluminium production capabilities. The first phase of the project is expected to be operational within the next three years.

Strategic Expansion in Odisha’s Industrial Landscape

At the Utkarsh Odisha-Make in Odisha business conclave, Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal confirmed that the new facility will include a 6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) alumina refinery and a 3 MTPA green aluminium plant. This investment builds upon Vedanta’s existing presence in Odisha, where the company has already infused over ₹1 lakh crore into various industrial projects.

Vedanta has secured the Sijimali bauxite mine in Rayagada, which is currently being developed to support the upcoming refinery. The company’s ongoing operations in Odisha include a 1.8 MTPA smelter in Jharsuguda and a 3.5 MTPA alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, along with active chrome and iron ore mining ventures in other districts.

Plans for a World-Class University in Odisha

Beyond industrial development, Vedanta is also exploring opportunities in the education sector. Agarwal reiterated the company’s commitment to establishing a university in Odisha, with an investment ranging from ₹6,000 to ₹10,000 crore. Despite past legal challenges, he remains optimistic about the project’s future, emphasizing the need to provide world-class education within India to prevent talent migration abroad.

With this ambitious aluminium project and broader developmental plans, Vedanta continues to drive economic growth and industrial innovation in Odisha, reinforcing its position as a key player in India’s resource and manufacturing sectors.
